The two sides of Ibiza

Roughly speaking, the west and south-west — San Antonio, Bay of San Antonio, Platja d'en Bossa — is where the big clubs and party crowds gather. The north and east of the island is the opposite: rolling hills, pine forests, hidden coves and small villages where life moves slowly. If peace and quiet matter to you, base yourself in the north-east.

• Sant Joan and the north: the greenest, most rural part of the island, with sleepy villages and dramatic coastline.
• Santa Gertrudis: a chic inland village with great food and a calm, sophisticated feel.

• Look for a private or guests-only pool so you're not sharing with crowds.
• Prefer rural locations a little outside the town centre.
